Are you ready to make a difference to advocate for your professional interests and for pharmacy’s interests to advance patient care? Come to Minnesota Pharmacy Legislative Day and learn how! Even if you have never talked with, called or written your legislators before, this event will give you the tools you need to do so! Minnesota Pharmacy Legislative Day is the one annual event that represents the voice of all pharmacy settings in Minnesota! It is your opportunity to learn about the issues, gain the tools you need to advocate, and network with colleagues and the policymakers who will be supporting pharmacy’s issues. The day is broken into a morning session, afternoon at the Capitol and an evening reception and program, complete with meals throughout the day and more than 5 hours of continuing education! Best yet, this year’s event is right on the Capitol grounds at the newly renovated Best Western Capitol Ridge with complimentary parking and within an easy walk of all your meetings.

Morning Program

This year’s program has been designed to bring you the latest briefings on Minnesota pharmacy’s advocacy agenda from leadership of the Pharmacy Advocacy Task Force, their lobbyist Buck Humphrey and the MPhA and MSHP Public Policy Committees. Briefings on the Task Force’s legislative agenda and other issues of interest will be provided, including where each issue is in the legislative process, which committees will be key to moving them forward and specific requests for your meetings with policymakers.

The ever-popular and very knowledgeable Heidi Ann Ecker (Director of Government Affairs and Grassroots Programs for NACDS and the orchestrator of the strategic RxIMPACT grassroots event each year in Washington, D.C.) will give you tips to build your grassroots advocacy skills through an exciting nonpartisan program that will educate about the power of grassroots engagement, the policymaking process, the varying roles of our nation’s policymakers and how to use effective verbal and written communications to influence policy outcomes. This program will give you the tools you need to talk with policymakers — whether you have done so before or not.

A series of Roundtables will follow to brief you on and provide talking points on the key issues being advocated with policymakers to advance Minnesota pharmacy practice to improve patient care — including expanded pharmacist scope of practice such as prescribing of contraceptives, travel medications, smoking cessation products, and other issues.

Afternoon Visits with Your Senators and Representatives at the Minnesota Capitol

After enjoying a networking lunch, you will walk to your visits with your Senators and Representatives at the Minnesota Capitol, sharing key points on the issues you’ve heard about during the morning session using the advocacy tips you’ve learned. You will have the opportunity to go on visits with colleagues or student pharmacists by requesting appointments through the registration process. So even if you have never met with your or another legislator before, you’ll get the tools you need to talk with them and those policymakers who will impact pharmacy’s legislative agenda in the coming years.

Evening Program

Participants will meet back at the Best Western Capitol Ridge at 4:30 pm for a networking and social hour with colleagues. MPhA President-Elect Michelle Aytay will moderate a debriefing about your visits. Then Century Mortar Club Endowed Chair and PRIME Institute Director Steven Schondelmeyer will facilitate a panel discussion with key legislators who will impact pharmacy’s 2017 issues and health care in Minnesota. After the panel discussion, Steve will bring his insider insights to a fast-paced program looking at how health care reform will be revisited in Washington, DC, and what the potential impact will be on Minnesota health care. The day will wrap with Dr. Cody Wiberg providing an update from the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy on their key legislative issues and those impacting your professional practice.

Dresscode

The dress for Minnesota Pharmacy Legislative Day is business and participants are asked to wear their white coats.

* If you like to request a meeting with legislators during the afternoon of Minnesota Pharmacy Legislative Day, please signify your request when you complete your registration.
