Pharmacy Compounding Claim Concerns

We have received many calls from pharmacists about the new claims transmission protocols that have recently gone into place for compounded prescriptions. Dave Miller, International Association of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP) has provided the following article for your information.

On January 1, 2012, the new electronic claims transmission protocol for third-party prescriptions went into effect. Called D.0 (dee-point-oh) for short, it replaces the current 5.1 version that has been in place for several years. Many members are worried that this protocol is going to directly reduce reimbursement. In reality, reimbursement rates are determined by contracts with third-parties. D.0 is simply the “language” that pharmacy computers will need to speak in order to submit and adjudicate prescription claims.

D.0 Is Live… But Will Pharmacy Survive?

Patient Notification of Non-Covered Prescriptions

Pharmacists should have received notice from CMS about the requirement beginning January 1, 2012 to provide patients covered under Medicare Part D with a written standard notice when their prescription is not covered. While there is a 90 implementation period allowed for compliance by plans it is expected that pharmacies begin distributing these notices as soon as possible.

Download the notice, instructions (what may be altered/added), instructions (what can be added/altered), and FAQ distributed October last year.

For questions concerning the standardized pharmacy notice, please send an email to: PartD_Appeals@cms.hhs.gov.

Pharmacists are also encouraged to contact your system vendors (if applicable) to request that they automate the process (when a claim rejects – or is rejected by Part D and paid by a supplemental plan) to a notice that automatically prints.

2012 NCPA OWNERSHIP EVENTS SCHEDULED

Pharmacy Ownership Workshops and Jumpstart Your Pharmacy Business Seminar, Help Current and Future Independent Pharmacy Owners

Registration is now open for the 2012 National Community Pharmacists Association's (NCPA) ownership events. In 2012, the Pharmacy Ownership Workshops, sponsored by McKesson and in part by Pharmacists Mutual, will be held February 24-26 in Dallas, Tex.; May 18-20 in San Francisco, Calif.; and August 24-26 in Arlington, Va.

Launched in 1991, the Pharmacy Ownership Workshops offer 19.25 hours of continuing education credits for pharmacists seeking to purchase an existing store or open up a new one, or for existing owners to polish up important management skills. A key attraction for attendees will be one-on-one consultations with NCPA's new Senior Director of Store Operations & Marketing, Gabe Trahan, who is an expert in layout modification, merchandising, curb appeal, pricing strategies, and advertising as part of the new member benefit, Front-End Overhaul...More Traffic, More Profits! There will be a drawing for one free virtual pharmacy visit from Trahan during the workshop.

Introduced in 2010, in response to owner feedback, the Jumpstart Your Pharmacy Business: A Seminar for Owners is designed for current independent pharmacy owners looking to advance their business. Attendees will learn how to better analyze their finances, gain access to important tax and accounting information, understand the benefits of investing in technology, utilize merchandising tools, better handle third party audits, enhance their marketing prowess, and develop new niche services strategies. The 2012 date for the Jumpstart Seminar is July 14-15 in Alexandria, Va.
