Success for the MN Poison Center

MPhA joined 116 other groups in supporting the Minnesota Poison Center Coalition in their efforts to secure critical funding for the Poison Center.  They were successful in obtaining an additional annual appropriation of $750,000 at the 2015 Minnesota state legislature – the bill was signed into law by Governor Dayton on May 23rd.  Funds will be used to maintain statewide emergency 24/7 call center services and to provide additional prevention education and public health surveillance.

More than 450 advocates from Hennepin County Medical Center and from hospitals, EMS, disaster preparedness coalitions, community groups, and the public across the state assisted with letters, emails and phone calls to legislators, as well as testimonials, critical contacts, and coalition building.  The statewide coalition in support of this critical funding ultimately included 117 groups (including MPhA), hospitals, clinics, and disaster preparedness coalitions serving every county in Minnesota.

From the Minnesota Poison Control System: “Your advocacy and assistance in our coalition building were critical to our success and are greatly appreciated.  In addition to providing invaluable assistance in securing much-needed funds, your voice raised legislators’ awareness about the critical services of the Poison Center for health care providers and community members across Minnesota.”
