Join us for Minnesota Pharmacy Legislative Day on February 27, 2018
The one annual event that represents the voice of pharmacy in Minnesota for policy makers! We're back at the Capitol this year!
Are you ready to make a difference to advocate for your professional interests and for pharmacy’s interests to advance patient care? Come to Minnesota Pharmacy Legislative Day and learn how! Even if you have never talked with, called or written your legislators before, this event will give you the tools you need to do so! Minnesota Pharmacy Legislative Day is the one annual event that represents the voice of all pharmacy settings in Minnesota for legislators, the governor and other policy makers! It is your opportunity to learn about the issues, gain the tools you need to advocate, and network with colleagues and the policymakers who will be supporting pharmacy’s issues. The day will feature a morning session, afternoon at the Capitol and an evening networking reception and program, complete with meals throughout the day and more than 5 hours of continuing education! This year we are back on the Capitol grounds at the Best Western Capitol Ridge with complimentary parking and within an easy walk of all your meetings.
This year’s program has been designed to bring you the latest briefings on Minnesota pharmacy’s advocacy agenda from leaders of the Pharmacy Advocacy Task Force, their lobbyist Buck Humphrey and the MPhA and MSHP Public Affairs and Policy Committees. Briefings on the Task Force’s legislative agenda and other issues of interest will be provided, including where each issue is in the legislative process, which committees will be key to moving the issues forward and specific requests for your meetings with policymakers.
Lobbyist and long-time grassroots organizer Buck Humphrey will give you tips to build your grassroots advocacy skills and create targeted messaging for your appointments. This program will give you the tools you need to talk with policymakers — whether you have done so before or not.
A series of Roundtables will follow to brief you on and provide talking points on the key issues being advocated with policymakers to advance Minnesota pharmacy practice to improve patient care — including expanded pharmacist scope of practice such as prescribing of contraceptives, travel medications and tobacco cessation products. You’ll also be briefed on efforts related to pharmacists as mental health providers, medication administration and reimbursement issues, among others.
Afternoon Visits with Your Senators and Representatives at the Minnesota Capitol
After enjoying a networking lunch, you will walk to your visits with your state senators and representatives at the Minnesota Capitol, sharing key points on the issues you’ve heard about during the morning session using the advocacy tips you’ve learned. You will have the opportunity to go on visits with colleagues or student pharmacists by requesting appointments through the registration process. So even if you have never met with your or another legislator before, you’ll get the tools you need to talk with them and other policymakers who will impact pharmacy’s legislative agenda in the coming years.
President Molly Ekstrand and MSHP President Rachel Root will facilitate an information sharing and debriefing session about your visits. Then Century Mortar Club Endowed Chair and PRIME Institute Director Stephen Schondelmeyer will facilitate a panel discussion with key legislators who will impact pharmacy’s 2018 issues and health care in Minnesota. After the panel discussion, Steve will bring his insider insights to a fast-paced program looking at key issues related to health care reform. The day will wrap with Dr. Cody Wiberg providing an update from the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy on their key legislative issues and those impacting your professional practice.
