Required Faculty Materials (needed by May 26):

Required Learning Materials:
- Three-four sentence description of the session (needed by May 26)
- Learning Objectives for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians (3 per 1 hour presentation minimum written in behavioral terms) (needed by May 26) Learning Objective Help.
- Separate learning objectives for Technicians is required as their scope of practice is differs from pharmacists.
- Please refrain from using the words 'understand' or 'learn' as the verbs as they can only be measured if a post-test is administered which we will not be doing.
- Presentation Slides and/or handouts (needed by August 8, 2018)
- 3-5 Post Test Questions with answers provided either orally or as a handout for learner assessment (needed by August 8, 2018)
Presentations must include one of the following for active learning:
- Case(s) Example with Questions and Discussion
- Activities-such as calculations, application exercise, manipulation of equipment, or discussion opportunities
All of the above required materials must be received in the
MPhA office no later than 4pm on May 26 with the exception of your power point and post-test questions which are due August 8.

As an approved accredited provider with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, MPhA is responsible for assuring that Criteria for Quality are met for each continuing education offering. MPhA Education Advisory Committee pharmacist volunteers develop the program and identify presenters to deliver the program and MPhA Staff coordinate the event logistics. By meeting these Criteria, the program is eligible for CE credit.
To meet the criteria, MPhA staff must be involved with development and approval of:
- Program title, goals and learning objectives, and learning materials e.g. slides, handouts
- Promotional materials
- Program evaluation procedures
- Developing Learning Materials
Prior to offering the program, presentations, handouts and any other learning materials must be approved by MPhA. Failure to meet the due date will result in non-accreditation of your program.
Most faculty use Microsoft Power Point as the basis for organizing their session. Tips to keep in mind when creating your presentation:
- Make one major point per slide
- Limit number of words per line and lines per slide by using Speaker Notes function-outline details rather than making slides text heavy
- Number of slides should be less than number of minutes for presentation
- Use light text on dark background or hard text on light background for good contrast
- Do not use more colors than needed to be effective
- Font size should be 24 or greater
In preparing slides, faculty must consider the following CE Policies:
- Fair Balance
All continuing pharmacy education programs should provide for an in‑depth presentation with fair and equitable balance.
Slides should avoid the use of images, logos or other visual aids that could be construed as promotional or assisting in the endorsement of a particular product. Also to that end, generic drug names should be used. Patient care recommendations should be evidence-based. Citations should be provided on the slides.
When discussion involves off-label or investigational uses of drug products, this fact must be disclosed. In addition, disclosure occurs when the information presented represents ongoing research, interim analysis, or preliminary data.
- Active Learning
The session’s design must allow for and encourage active participation and involvement on the part of the participant. In live programs, approaches include, but are not limited to, pre-tests, patient management case studies and problem solving activities, manipulation of equipment or data, exercises, and discussion opportunities.
When developing your presentation, please leave at least five minutes for questions.
- Pharmacy Focus
Continuing education for pharmacists must be pertinent to the contemporary practice of pharmacy. This includes topics, such as: the properties and actions of drugs and dosage forms; the etiology, characteristics, therapeutics and prevention of disease states; the pharmaceutical monitoring and management of patient therapy; and the social, economic, behavioral, legal, administrative and managerial aspects of pharmacy practice and health care.
In those instances where the topics selected are not exclusively specific to pharmacy (e.g., diagnosis, personnel management, communications, anatomy, etc.), the faculty should take appropriate steps to assure that the content is explicitly related to the contemporary practice of pharmacy.
- Learning Assessment
A mechanism must be provided to allow all participants to assess their achievement, in accord with the program's learning objectives. Short multiple choice post-tests are one means of providing participants with an opportunity to assess their learning.
In addition to the test, feedback should be provided on correct responses. This feedback might be provided orally, through discussion of the answers following completion of a presentation, or in the form of a second handout, including the answers and, appropriate supplemental information (feedback or explanation of questions/answers, reference to additional learning materials).
- Copyright Policy
MPhA’s copyright policy is provided (see below paragraph) to each speaker of an MPhA-sponsored educational activity for information, review and compliance. Compliance with this policy is a condition of the speakers and panel members’ participation in an MPhA-sponsored activity
Visual presentations and handouts are essential components to quality continuing medical education. It is not uncommon for speakers preparing such presentations and materials for an event sponsored by an educational organization such as MPhA to include materials copyrighted by another party.
Although the use of limited portions of copyrighted materials of others may be permissible under applicable copyright law, it is the policy of MPhA to exercise utmost effort to respect the proprietary rights of authors and other creators of medical education works in MPhA-sponsored activities.
MPhA requires that speakers preparing visual presentations, handouts and other materials for use in the connection with live activities sponsored by the MPhA be aware of the following policies:
- Speakers of MPhA-sponsored events must refrain from incorporating materials copyrighted by others whenever possible unless: (a) the speaker is satisfied that the amount of such copyrighted work and the nature of its use is permissible as “fair use” under copyright law; or (b) the written permission of the author or other copyright holder is obtained for the use of such materials.
- When copyrighted material of others are used as described in Item 1 above, the speaker must cite the source of the copyrighted material, which must include a valid copyright notice (i.e. “Copyright © 2003. John Doe, M.D.”) as well as the phrase, “Reprinted with permission of the copyright owner.”
- Independent Contractor Relationship
Speaker is an independent contractor. Speaker is not an employee, servant, agent, partner or joint-venture of MPhA at any time contemplated by this Agreement and shall not represent Speaker’s opinions to be that of MPhA. Speaker – at all times – shall state that Speaker’s opinions are those of Speaker and NOT those of MPhA and if any media or other materials are used, they shall so reflect.
MPhA reserves the right to cancel this Agreement and replace Speaker if the specified due dates for deliverables are missed. MPhA reserves the right to cancel any session, change the length or size of any session, or change the place of any session at its discretion at any time. In the event of cancellation, MPhA shall not be liable for any expenses, costs, or damages incurred by Speaker except for any expenses incurred and not recoverable. If Speaker desires to cancel, Speaker agrees to provide thirty (30) days written notice to MPhA of cancellation prior to his/her first scheduled session. In the event the program does not meet its required attendance, MPhA reserves the right to reschedule or cancel the event.
- License for Content Archiving/Capture
- Speaker grants to MPhA a non-exclusive license to use Speaker’s presentation and handout materials (collectively “Speaker Property”) in any manner MPhA deems appropriate including, but not limited to, the reproduction, distribution, creation of derivative works, and display on the internet of Speaker Property, with MPhA retaining the proceeds derived from such distribution and use of Speaker Property.
- Speaker also agrees to work directly with the company performing these services for MPhA and follow all deadlines to provide Power Point presentations and handouts that may be associated for content archiving.
Speaker shall present the session(s) set forth in this Agreement and shall:
- Promptly reply to all email correspondence from MPhA
- Not defame, slander or libel any person, firm or corporation.
- Present sessions according to MPhA Standards of Professionalism and shall not denigrate MPhA, its programs or representatives in any manner.
- Agree and state that all materials and content presented by Speaker do not infringe or violate any copyright, trademark, patent or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, nor do they promote or endorse any product, service, or device which may or is at the time of the program not approved by any governing agency.
- Program Content and Non-Commercialism Policy
To meet criteria for accreditation as established by ACPE and the Minnesota State Board of Pharmacy, all of MPhA’s continuing pharmacy education programs must be applicable to the practice of pharmacy, include active participation of the attendee, be planned independent from commercial interest and the educational content must be presented with full disclosure and equitable balance.
To ensure compliance with these criteria, MPhA and Speaker agree that:
- They will examine all presentation content and materials carefully to ensure that the presentation will not be misinterpreted as promoting or appearing to endorse a specific commercial drug, devise product and/or service.
- Advertisements and promotional materials cannot be displayed or distributed in the educational space immediately before, during or after a continuing pharmacy education activity.
- Representatives of commercial interests are prohibited from engaging in sales or promotional activities while in the space or place of the continuing pharmacy education activity.
- Educational materials, such as slides, abstracts and handouts, cannot contain any advertising, trade name or a product-group message. This also pertains to company names, logos, etc. – please refrain from using them in the slide content, in headers and/or footers on the handouts.
- The content or format of a continuing pharmacy educational activity or its related materials must promote improvements or quality in health care and not a specific proprietary business interest of a commercial interest.
- Presentations must give a balanced view of the therapeutic options. Use of generic names will contribute to this impartiality. If the program materials or content include trade names, where available, trade names from several companies should be used and not just trade names from a single company.
- Speaker must disclose all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest within the past 12 months.
- Audio-Visual Equipment
MPhA will provide standard audio visual equipment for the Speaker’s use during the presentation. Speaker agrees to review the audio-visual section of the Speaker Arrangements Contract and Guidance form (page 5 of this document) and list any additional audio-visual requirements or room set-up, if necessary.

Presentations must give a balanced view of therapeutic options. Faculty is asked to use generic names to contribute to this impartiality. If trade names are used, those of several companies should be used rather than only that of a single company. In designing educational presentations, the speaker shall assure that the presentation is free of commercial bias for or against any product and, if the presentation is concerned with commercial products, the speaker must present objective information about those products, based on scientific methods generally accepted in the medical community. When an unlabeled use of a commercial product, or an investigational use not yet approved for any purpose is discussed during an educational activity, the speaker shall disclose to the audience that the product is not labeled for the use under discussion or that the product is still investigational. Ultimately, MPhA as the accredited provider shall have control of the content of presentations and slides.
