A Message from the MPhA President

By Michelle Aytay

Legislative Session will start soon and we all know what that means – Pharmacy Legislative Day is just around the corner! Legislative Day is one of my favorite days of the year. I love the opportunity to gather all of Minnesota Pharmacy together to advocate for our profession and to visit with colleagues old and new! I am looking forward to filling the capitol with white pharmacy coats on February 27!

All are welcome! If you haven’t attended in the past, I encourage you to attend. There are legislative day resources available on the MPhA website to help prepare you for your day, including information on how to work with your legislator and important information on current issues affecting pharmacy.
If you haven’t registered yet, do it now — it is easy! Just click here. Here is a sneak peek of what you will be in for.

Legislative day activities conveniently take place at the Best Western Plus Capitol Ridge, which offers free parking and is walking distance to the state capitol and state office building. Your day will begin by hearing from the Pharmacy Advocacy Task Force lobbyist Buck Humphrey, and MSHP and MPhA leaders about the current legislative landscape and important issues facing pharmacy. You will also be provided with tips to make your visits with your legislators a success! Sara Drake will provide an overview of Medicaid and its role in U.S. Health Care. Prior to heading over to the capitol, you will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of roundtables designed to help you better understand the issues facing our profession by discussing current topics with your colleagues — such as the Pharmacy Advocacy Task Force; opioid stewardship legislation; pharmacists as mental health providers; pharmacist medication administration; health system pharmacy related legislation/topics; Medicaid reimbursement; patient fair practices legislation; the Board of Pharmacy legislation package; and College of Pharmacy Updates…to name a few.

After a fun-filled morning with colleagues and afternoon visits with your legislators, we will all reconvene back at the Best Western Plus Capitol Ridge to share our experiences. In addition, we will have legislators join us for a panel moderated by Stephen Schondelmeyer and then hear from Dr. Schondelmeyer on his insights into the key issues affecting health care reform. The evening will conclude with a Minnesota Board of Pharmacy Issue Update presented by Cody Wiberg, Executive Director, Minnesota Board of Pharmacy.

I hope that sharing this information helps get you excited to gather with your colleagues and advocate for Pharmacy in Minnesota at the State Capitol on February 27! I look forward to meeting with friends both old and new this Legislative Day! If you have any questions about the event, please reach out to me and if you haven’t registered yet, do it now!
