Mission Moment:

Brundage Elected Regent for ACCP

Richard Brundage

Richard C. Brundage, PharmD, PhD, Professor in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, has been elected as a Regent to the American College of Clinical Pharmacology for the 2019-2023 term. Members of the Board of Regents are elected by ACCP’s voting membership.

Editor’s Note: During our Annual Learning Networking Event in September, MPhA made note of Mission Moments — those times when a member clearly exemplified our mission to advance patient care. As we move through the year, we will continue to showcase these Mission Moments as part of Small Doses. If you have an example to share, please send it to Laurie Pumper.

Pharmacists Needed for Annual Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic

As part of the Minnesota Dental Association Foundation’s free two-day Mission of Mercy dental clinic, pharmacists are needed to dispense medications and counsel patients. You can choose a half-day shift (6 a.m. to Noon or Noon to 5:30 p.m.) on either Friday or Saturday, September 7 and 8. Volunteers are especially needed for the early shift on Saturday. The Minnesota Board of Pharmacy issues a variance to allow pharmacists to perform the final check on medications issued under the order of a dentist. The event will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Several pharmacists have already signed up — this is a fun opportunity to give back to our community while working with fellow pharmacists and dentists.

Get more information by watching a video and/or visiting the MDA website. There is a link to volunteer on the MDA website, or you can contact Executive Director Carmelo Cinqueonce at ccinque@mndental.org.

Eli Lilly Defies California Law with Insulin Price Hikes

From APhA’s Pharmacy Today newsletter, Aug. 13: Eli Lilly has chosen not to follow a California law that took effect in January requiring pharmaceutical companies to disclose as well as justify planned price increases for prescription drugs. Eli Lilly has informed customers it will not issue such notices until an industry lawsuit challenging the law's legitimacy is resolved. Under California law, drug makers must notify insurers and some state agencies of any price increase that exceeds 16% over 2 years on medications with a wholesale cost exceeding $40 for a course of therapy. However, drug makers are not penalized if their prices are deemed too high.

Consumer advocates have been critical of Eli Lilly's decision to significantly raise prices on its human insulin products. Many patients are using less insulin than prescribed, putting their health at-risk, a study from Yale University concluded.
