MPhA Board Members Plan for the Future

MPhA Board members gathered on May 29 for their annual retreat. The purpose was to determine priorities and set a course for the year ahead. The Board discussed the current state of the association and steps to continue to improve the organization. Among the items on the Board’s radar are: implementation of the new legislative changes through practice transformation; monitoring our finances; continuing our strong advocacy efforts; and looking at membership engagement and communication. A Board-approved strategic plan will be shared with the membership in the months ahead as this is finalized.

Medication Safety Tip

From Alliance for Medication Safety: To prevent drugs from being chosen off the shelf in error, the following systems should be in place:

  1. Mandatory bar-code scanning;
  2. Separator walls on the shelf;
  3. Use tall-man lettering for the shelf-labels;
  4. Separate storage bins;
  5. “Un-alphabetical” storage for medications with similar prefixes;
  6. Use of brand AND generic names on the shelf labels of “LASA” (look-alike-sound-alike) medications.

2019 Leadership Summit and House of Delegates: Building Tomorrow Together

Your Voice = MPhA Priorities • Wednesday, June 12 • 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. • Midland Hills Country Club, Roseville

Minnesota Pharmacy scored major wins in the just-concluded 2019 session of the Minnesota Legislature — including PBM licensure and reform that will eliminate PBM steering and retroactive fees, and create transparency in reimbursement for pharmacists, patients and payers. We also won expanded medication administration authority as part of the opioid stewardship bill. Finally, Gov. Walz has signed legislation raising the Fee-for-Service Medicaid dispensing fee and bringing the state into compliance with the CMS Covered Outpatient Drug Rule.

These issues are part of MPhA’s and Minnesota pharmacy’s agenda because members like you had concerns and brought policies to the MPhA House of Delegates for discussion and adoption during the past three years. Your voice matters. Your input into MPhA policy matters. It drives our advocacy agenda, and this year’s wins are a direct result of members speaking up.

Continue the tradition this year when you join Minnesota pharmacists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for a day of inspiration, information, influence building and crafting MPhA policy. Come to the 2019 MPhA Leadership Summit and House of Delegates meeting on Wednesday, June 12, at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville, Minn.

Michelle Johnson

By participating, you will join your colleagues in advancing Minnesota pharmacy practice! You’ll be involved in discussions on important initiatives and pharmacy’s advocacy agenda and earn up to 3.75 hours of continuing education credits.

A number of important issues will be discussed. This is your time as a member to voice your opinions and shape your association!

Special MPhA Webinar: Prepare Your Pharmacy for New Laws Effective in Weeks

Wednesday, June 19 • 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. • Online Webinar

This year’s legislative session was very active — numerous legislative issues passed that will impact pharmacy. Any bills included in the Omnibus budget bill signed by Gov. Walz take effect on July 1, 2019, because the omnibus bill contained a fiscal note. All other issues that passed will be effective on August 1, 2019. Don’t be caught off guard — attend this webinar to stay informed about changes.

MPhA and Minnesota Pharmacy had great success at the session — but there were also bills we did not sponsor with pharmacy-related provisions that need to be implemented on July 1, 2019.

Minnesota Pharmacy Alliance Lobbyist Buck Humphrey and MPhA Public Affairs Committee Co-Chairs Jeff Lindoo and Tony Post will walk through the issues pharmacists and pharmacies need to address during this special one-hour webinar.
Specific issues that will be addressed include:

  • Opioid Stewardship: limitations on prescribing, prescription filling for CII-V, refilling for CIII-V, identification checking requirements
  • Medication Administration Expanded Authority
  • Minnesota Fee-for-Service Medicaid Reimbursement: Implementation process and important documentation needed from pharmacies
  • Forthcoming changes to the Minnesota Managed Care Medicaid Preferred Drug List
  • Minnesota Provider/Wholesaler tax changes
  • Authority for Emergency Prescription Refills
  • Prescription Drug Repository Program — LTC PDs recycling program
  • Recipient of Emergency Prescription Orders & Drug Coverage in Emergency Situations and payment

The PBM Licensure and Regulation bill will be discussed in a future webinar — but if time permits, the speakers will answer questions about it.
