USP <800> Hazardous Drugs: FAQs

Currently Informational Only

From NASPA Weekly Recap, Dec. 20: USP recently posted FAQs related to USP Chapter <800> clarifying that the chapter is only applicable when a practitioner is compounding. USP <800> only applies to handling of hazardous drugs (HDs) where there is a risk of exposure to patients, health care workers, and the environment. USP <795> and <797> were intended to contain reference to <800>, which would make <800> apply to compounding. For HDs, this means only when a practitioner is “compounding” (as that term is defined in <795> and <797>) would <800> be applicable. For example, since administration and dispensing final dosage forms is out of scope of <795> and <797>, <800> would not apply in this context (see FAQ #65). The FAQs specifically state, “since administration and dispensing final dosage forms is out of scope of <795> and <797>, <800> would not apply in this context.” Read the full FAQ document.

CBD Basics for Pharmacists

From National Community Pharmacists Association website, accessed Dec. 30: Why does CBD belong in a pharmacy? As Pharmacists, we have always owned the title “Drug Expert.” That’s because our customers have always believed that we are the resource they know and trust with all their questions about their health care in general, and their medications in particular. Now that we know our customers are taking CBD, it’s imperative that we become the “CBD Expert.”

The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) has developed a website to help Pharmacists learn the basics of CBD, including laws and regulations, the differences between medical marijuana and CBD, and webinars and CE specifically for Pharmacists.
