Huge Legislative Win for Minnesota Pharmacy!

Governor Signs HHS Omnibus Bill that Advances Pharmacy Practice

Thank you to all stakeholders who worked extremely hard on this legislation. As a wonderful conclusion to a very long and convoluted process this session at the Capitol, Gov. Dayton signed the Health & Human Services Omnibus Budget Bill! What does this mean? Pharmacist immunization authority will be expanded to allow pharmacist administration of influenza vaccines to all eligible individuals SIX years of age and up (previous language only allowed TEN years of age and up for influenza). In addition, pharmacists will now be allowed to administer all other vaccines to patients 13 years of age and older; previous language only allowed 18 years of age and older. Additional immunization language will require pharmacists to check MIIC prior to administering any vaccine except influenza to individuals 9 and older and to report all vaccines to MIIC. Pharmacist technician language was also changed to allow pharmacists to supervise 3 technicians (+1 if one is PTCB certified); previous language was 2:1+1. Contrary to our previous announcement, it appears these changes will be effective July 1, this year. You will receive clarification from the Board of Pharmacy in the near future. Download full language of the bill.

This was a combined effort — with hard work from chief authors Rep. Roz Peterson and Sen. Julie Rosen, the Minnesota Pharmacists Association, the Minnesota Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, the Minnesota Grocers Association, the Minnesota Retailers Association, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, and the Pharmacy Practice Act Joint Task Force. Thanks also to every pharmacist who contacted your legislators, to the pharmacists who testified in support of the bill at the Capitol — to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen!
