From NCPA eCommunications, Aug. 29: Minnesota pharmacists may wonder how pharmacies are handling refills during the Texas flooding. The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) has provided some information:

  • Emergency Preparedness Refill-Too-Soon Edit Override: The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) members have approved the most effective method for overriding refill-too-soon-type reject during a disaster: Use the Submission Clarification Code 13, Payer-Recognized Emergency/Disaster Assistance Request. The pharmacist is indicating that an override is needed based on an emergency/disaster situation recognized by the payer. Access more information on Emergency Preparedness here.
  • Texas health officials have issued guidance for pharmacies that need to dispense emergency refills. Get more info.
  • Check Healthcare Ready for a list of pharmacies open during the disaster.

The National Community Pharmacists Association Foundation encourages donations to its Disaster Relief Fund, which helps independent community pharmacy owners restore their businesses when the unthinkable happens.

In addition, the American Pharmacists Association reports:

While pharmacies and pharmacists in the affected region battle to help others and stay safe, here are ways that the rest of us can help, according to the Houston Chronicle and theWashington Post.

Debbie Garza, CEO of the Texas Pharmacy Association, told APhA, “We have been receiving calls from hospitals in the affected area and have referred folks to NCPDP’s Healthcare Ready Rx Open. We are just communicating resources to our members right now. Everyone is recommending coordination through Red Cross for what is needed. We are not coordinating any pharmacist volunteer efforts. The chains are handling their individual company needs, and the different independent groups in Texas are still assessing their members.”
